There is a considerable shortage of female managers in public institutions across Africa. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, Gender Equality, the AFROSAI Women Leadership Academy (WLA) was developed as a unique leadership development programme that targets middle management female auditors from African Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs). On 25 September, the WLA successfully started with its first module in Dakar, Senegal.
It is the second time that the WLA is being implemented by the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI) and the Good Financial Governance (GFG) in Africa Programme implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Union. It aims at participants’ personal leadership development as well as equipping them with the management skills needed in their daily work. The eight month long WLA is made up of three presence modules, one in Senegal, one in Germany, and one in South Africa. During the course of the programme period, participants also implement transfer projects to the benefit of their sending institution, an endeavor in which they are supported by a mentor in their institutions. Moreover, participants receive personalised coaching on their leadership skills throughout the WLA and have access to course material and the ability to exchange online via a member-restricted eLearning platform.
The first module took place from the 25 to 30 September 2017 and was hosted by the Court of Accounts of Senegal. The official opening ceremony featured addresses by the First President of SAI Senegal, the representative of the German Embassy in Dakar, the General Secretary of AFROSAI, and a keynote speech on female leadership by Mrs Aminata Touré, former Prime Minister of Senegal. The Dakar module gave the 19 participants from Botswana, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe the opportunity to get acquainted with each other, familiarise themselves with the different aspects of leadership as well as review their reform projects according to basic principles of project management.
The WLA 2017 transfer projects focus on:
– SAIs’ role in the implementation of SDGs
– Gender Equality
– Professionalisation of Auditors
– Extractive Industries
With two topics highlighted in the INTOSAI Abu Dhabi Declaration, i.e. SDGs and Professionalisation, the WLA is a great tool to showcase the African contribution to the objectives of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions. The next module will take place in Germany in December 2017.
